Our History

Malley & Co Lawyers, a Christchurch law firm, was established in 1897 by Alf Malley.

Alf was joined by his sons, Felix and Edmund in the early 1940's. Felix was the office accountant and manager. Edmund developed a large commercial property and business practice, much of which remains with the firm today. The long and stable history of the firm has also seen intergenerational continuity over the years.

Alf was joined by the firm's first partner in 1955, Bill Brown. Bill handled all of the common law cases of the firm until he was appointed a District Court Judge in 1966. Following in Bill's footsteps in later years were subsequent partners of the firm Garry Mahon and Brian Callaghan who were both appointed as District Court Judges.

During the 1970's-1990's the firm was enriched by the input of the following partners: John Richardson(1975-1981), Ian Turner (1982-1985), Lee Robinson (1978 - 2001), Michael Kirkland (1985-2002) , Ian Thomson (1999-2003) , Robert O'Connor (2001-2005) . Since 1897 Malley & Co Lawyers has operated from only five sites. We currently operate from modern premises at 47 Cathedral Square, Christchurch and 401 Main South Road Hornby, Christchurch, in New Zealand.
